Image of ‘Fisher Price’ drug dealer toy is AI-generated
Image was made using artificial intelligence and reshared across multiple platforms
CLAIM
Versions of the same image shared across social media appeared to show a Fisher Price toy ‘My First Dealer’ kit that included a gun, cash, bags of cannabis, and a hoodie.
BACKGROUND
A series of posts were widely shared from August into September, including the same image of the purported toy kit.
A Facebook user, Rob Robinson, shared the image in September along with the caption: “Fisher Price brand new toy line “ My First Dealer Kit” Available this holiday season.”
A reverse search of the picture brought us to other, earlier uses of the image.
On August 12, a higher resolution version of the image was shared on Reddit with the headline: “Goals 😉.”
Also in August, the image was shared to a Facebook page called ‘Pin Up Girl Poker Run‘ without a caption.
We found dozens of other uses of the image across the main social platforms, and also on 9GAG.
METHOD
Many of the usages of this image appeared to have been posted with humorous captions as a meme.
To find out how this image came about, we analysed the clearer versions of the picture that we could find.
On closer reading of the box, several typos are evident. The ‘Fisher Price’ logo actually says ‘Fisher Picce’, and ‘MY FIRST DEALER KT’ misspells the word ‘kit’.
The other text on the box also warrants closer inspection. It is not in Latin script, and in fact, much of it appears to be a random selection of symbols and scripts that is illegible.
The placement of the items in the box is also unusual, particularly the hoodie, which appears to protrude outside the bounds of the box. The image has a smooth, airbrushed quality, which makes it appear like an AI-generated image.
Furthermore, no evidence exists that Fisher Price has ever made this kit. It is not featured in any official literature from the company or its parent company, Mattel.
From this analysis, we can conclude that the picture was made using AI and later shared, likely as a prank, before being reproduced across dozens of accounts in different countries.
