Claims that Zelenskyy blocked access to Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform in Ukraine are false
The platform has not been made available in Ukraine
CLAIM
Claims circulated on social media suggesting that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blocked access to Donald Trump’s social media platform Truth Social in Ukraine.
BACKGROUND
As Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy exchanged heated words over the Russian invasion of Ukraine, several high-profile conservative influencers claimed that Zelenskyy had blocked access to Truth Social, the social media platform owned by Trump, in Ukraine.
“BREAKING: Zelensky blocks access to President Trump’s social media platform Truth Social across Ukraine,” conservative political commentator, Benny Johnson wrote, accompanied by a screenshot reading “Truth Social is currently unavailable in your area.”
American far-right media personality Alex Jones recorded a video message describing Zelenskyy as “increasingly Isolated and desperate.”
“An increasingly Isolated and desperate Zelensky, blocks Trump’s Truth Social network across Ukraine. This only further proves that Zelensky is an unpopular DICTATOR!” Jones said.
Another X user wrote: “Zelensky blocked access to TruthSocial in Ukraine. Guess Trump was right, he is a dictator and this proves Trump’s words.”
The statement was shared across numerous platforms including on Facebook and Instagram and was posted by state-run Russia Today.
METHOD
Using a VPN, we attempted to access Truth Social from Ukraine to test the website’s availability. We found that the site was indeed inaccessible and displayed the message: ‘Truth Social is currently unavailable in your area.’
Shortly after claims surfaced that Zelenskyy had banned Truth Social in Ukraine, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry released a statement denying the allegation, adding that the social media platform had never been made available in the country.
“We have seen reports suggesting that access to the Truth Social network has been blocked in Ukraine. These reports are false. Ukraine did not and could not block access because, unfortunately, the social network Truth Social has never made itself available to users in Ukraine,” the statement read.
A Ukrainian state agency, the Center for Countering Disinformation, also denied the claim.
“Russians are lying that Ukraine has banned Truth Social, which, in fact, has never been available in our country,” the government body said.
RATING
The claim that Truth Social has been blocked by President Zelenskyy in Ukraine is false. While Truth Social is indeed not available in Ukraine, this is not due to Zelenskyy blocking access but rather because the platform has not been made available there, Ukrainian officials have confirmed.
